#1 This week came with some sad news for UFO Movie enthusiasts. The iconic cult classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind has lost one of its legendary actresses. Melinda Dillon, who played the character Jillian Guiler, mother of Barry Guiler, the little boy who is abducted. Dillon was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was 83 years old when died January 9, 2023.
#2 Radiation surviving aliens. Technically. A former uranium mine in Germany should be incapable of supporting any life, and yet it is doing surprisingly well. I suppose I should define life in this particular context. No wide-eyed ambulatories here. This surprising ecosystem is instead inhabited by fungus, amoebas, and protozoa among several other wacky microorganisms. In the depth of darkness, they have all found a way to thrive amid high acids and radioactivity. This isn’t the first time life has been found in similar environments. Fungus found in Chernobyl actually feeds on radiation. One more reason to believe life could exist on planets like Jupiter and Mars.
#3 It's a static issue. Adding AI to the alien communication department has actually gotten some results. Albeit, not the most desired results, but nonetheless… Using AI, scientists were recently able to find eight signals picked up by radio telescopes that are anomalies. Which is exactly what they were looking for. So far, the anomalies are being chalked up to radio interference, basically something interfered with known signals. Maintaining the realm of easily explainable postulates for the time being, the AI autoencoder results are looking to smartphones and wifi sources as the cause of the static.
