The largest collection of UFO sighting archives in the United States has a new home. Held in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, David Marler’s vast collection will soon be housed in conjunction with the local school district to allow for public access. These records include declassified government documents, photographs, police reports, books, magazines, news clippings, microfilm and videos. Collections include those from the National Investigation Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP), the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO) and the Center for UFO STudies (CUFOS). Beyond the goal of making these records available to UFO researchers, Marler had also reached a point of needing more space as he continues to receive more collections and UFO related items. The archive also includes the personal collections of Lee Spiegel. Some of the records involve sightings that go back as far as the 1800s. In a recent news report, Marler shared one of his most treasured items is the glove of a man who touched a UFO in Manitoba, Canada in 1967, finger ends are burnt.
David Marler believes UFOs are as much a part of our history and culture as anything else. Their mission statement summarizes the cause:
“Collect, preserve, and provide historical UFO materials to the general public and interested parties. With the accumulated data, we hope to assist with serious UFO research endeavors and aid in an accurate chronicling of UFO history for present and future generations regardless of belief or non-belief in the subject matter.”
The NUFOHRC website also shares its goals to include “reducing stigma around the topic” of UFO sightings and increase cooperation and inspire students to want to learn more about science and government.
The records center takes donations. Public access can be granted by appointment.
