The Haunted Red Onion Saloon

By

By Margie Kay

The Red Onion Saloon in Skagway, Alaska was established in 1898. The saloon began its life as a brothel catering to miners during the Klondike Gold Rush, a time when many flocked to Alaska in search of fortune. What made this establishment unique compared to other bordellos of the era was its innovative use of dolls to manage its business operations. This quirky practice was not just a gimmick; it served a practical purpose. Every day, ten dolls were placed prominently on the bar downstairs, with each doll representing one of the ladies who worked in the upstairs rooms. When a customer arrived, they would select one of the dolls, signaling that the corresponding worker was currently occupied.

This system allowed for a clear and simple way to communicate availability. Once the customer returned downstairs, the doll would be returned to its upright position, indicating to other potential clients that the lady was free for service.

Fast-forward to 2023, and the Red Onion Saloon continues to thrive as a lively bar and restaurant. Visitors can still see the dolls on display, a nod to its colorful past. The establishment also offers guided tours of the upstairs rooms, which have been preserved to resemble a makeshift brothel museum. This unique blend of history and hospitality attracts many curious tourists. As if the presence of the dolls wasn’t eerie enough, there are numerous reports of Lydia, a former madam of the brothel, haunting the premises. Patrons and staff alike have experienced cold spots and have reported the lingering scent of perfume wafting through the halls, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the already fascinating location.
