Mothman has not left Independence, Missouri. A woman and her husband reported seeing a "human-sized or larger creature with legs and huge wings" flying low over the Missouri River as they crossed the 291 bridge near La Benite Park on Sunday, August 11, 2024. The witnesses said that the creature was a very dark color, perhaps black, and it had bat-like wings that appeared to be 15 to 20 feet in width.
Nether of the witnesses had ever seen anything like it and were shocked at the creature's appearance. "It was dusk, and we were driving home from having dinner with friends. As we crossed the bridge, I noticed this strange thing gliding over the river from north to south from one bank to the other about 60 feet or so from the bridge. I asked my husband to slow down so we could get a better look at it. The thing then flapped its wings once as it landed in the trees on the opposite bank."
No photos were taken. The couple wishes to remain anonymous.
Numerous sightings of Mothman-type winged creatures have been reported in the Independence, Sugar Creek, and greater Kansas City area since 2011. Some speculate that the creature is following the Missouri River and sleeping under bridges. There have been four other sightings near this same bridge since 2016 but we have not received any reports for over a year - until now.
Since the Mothman Prophesies book and movie were released people have associated Mothman sightings with bridges and disasters. So far, we have had no disasters in the KC area after such sightings. The remaining sightings have occurred within a couple of miles of the Missouri River, which winds around greater Kansas City.
