The nearly 200 year old New Orleans mansion often known as the Lalaurie Mansion is for sale for a mere $10,250,000. Considered one of the most haunted properties in the Big Easy, the reasons for this status are tragic and heartbreaking.
Delphine LaLaurie is regarded a serial killer by many historians. Rescuers attempting to save anyone inside the mansion during the great fire of 1834 found slaves bound and kept in inhumane conditions. Stories of the fire range from a few slaves being killed to many. Some tell of years of murder and torturous abuse. Whatever atrocities occurred in the mansion by her hand, the result was an attack on the property by others in the area. While in flight for France after the fire she met William Cullen Bryant who wrote about her deadly abuses.
From that day forward the home became known as The Haunted Mansion.
According to the Vieux Carré Digital Survey, a project of The Historic New Orleans Collection, the home was owned by Madame Lalaurie at the time of the deadly fire. The survey reports that so much of the home was damaged by the fire it would have been almost completely rebuilt by its next owner. There were also additions built in the 1900s and it was remodeled at some point in the 1970s. Although it is noted for its historic significance, it is not clear if it is historically designated. The survey also states it likely looked much like the Hermann-Grima House located at 820 St. Louis.
